Snow will persist over the Midwest and New England on Wednesday, as a strong winter storm continues tracking through the country. The system will strengthen as it reaches the East Coast due to counter-clockwise flow picking up moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and spreading moisture onshore. With cold air over the region, this will allow for another 5-9 inches over much of Pennsylvania and New York, while the Maryland will see 3-7 inches. Abundant moisture is not expected to reach the extreme Northeast, thus, most of Maine will see only 1-2 inches of new snow on Wednesday. The Great Lakes region will see decreasing snowfall as high pressure builds in from the Plains. This will start to dry out the region and allow for only 1-3 inches of snow, but will also bring strong winds with gusts up to 30 mph. This will allow for dangerous road conditions as blowing snow will reduce visibility.

Elsewhere in the Plains, Mississippi River Valley, and Southern US, expect to see dry and cool weather on Wednesday as a large ridge of high pressure pulls cool air in from Canada. The Northern Plains and Upper Midwest will only reach into the single digits, while the Southern Plains and Southeast will see highs in the 40s.

Out West, two interesting weather features will kick up some wet weather. A low pressure system spinning in the Pacific will continue pushing a cold front through California. As this system tracks southeastward through the state, it will combine with an area of low pressure developing over Mexico. Thus, scattered showers will persist over central and southern California, while southern portions of the Southwest may also see light rain.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of -25 degrees at Havre, Mont. to a high of 81 degrees at Kendall, Fla.
